Portrait photo of the artist with glasses, beard, and blue shirtJochen Meyer (born 1956) is a German painter from near Oldenburg, whose masterful oil painting is based on traditional craftsmanship. His figurative artworks combine influences from New Objectivity, Fantastic Realism, and Surrealism with elements of Pop Art and commercial graphics.

Craftsmanship & Layered Glazing Technique

Jochen Meyer's painting follows a carefully structured, classical process on a solid support:

  • Design & Outline: He captures initial pictorial ideas in pencil drawings, which are then transferred with ink onto a primed HDF panel.
  • Acrylic Underpainting: An initial underpainting with acrylic paint defines tonal values, light sources, and surface textures.
  • Oil Paints & Oil Glazes: In numerous layers of oil paint and fine glazes, he successively builds up the plastic depth and spatiality of the motif.

Style & Influences: New Objectivity and Fantastic Realism

Jochen Meyer's painterly signature is characterized by strongly figurative content. In poetic, freely associative visual worlds, elements of **New Objectivity** and **Surrealism** meet modern influences from Pop Art, graphic novels, and classic commercial graphics.

Vita: Medicine, Psychology, and Passion for Painting

Jochen Meyer grew up in Achim near Bremen. After initial semester studies in art education, he decided to study medicine in Marburg. Until 2017, he worked as a specialist in neurology and psychiatry/psychotherapy – his deep insights into the human psyche also shape his artistic work. Since 2017, he has once again dedicated himself fully and intensely to free painting in his studio near Oldenburg.
